Australia has ordered 1,100 Hawkei 4x4s from Thales

The Hawkei, which will replace unprotected Land Rovers, was downselected in 2011

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is to acquire 1,100 Hawkei 4x4 light protected mobility vehicles at a cost of AUD1.3 billion (USD910 million) to replace the majority of its unprotected Land Rover fleet, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced on 5 October.

The seven-tonne Hawkei, designed by Thales Australia to meet the requirements of Project Land 121 Phase 4, will be manufactured at the company's Bendigo facility in Victoria along with more than 1,000 trailers included in the same contract.

Pilot production will begin in early 2016, coinciding with the wind-down of work at Bendigo on the 15-tonne Bushmaster protected mobility vehicle now in service with Australia, Jamaica, Japan, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.

First deliveries of the Hawkei, named after a venomous Australian snake, are scheduled towards the end of 2017, and full-rate production will be under way in 2018.

In December 2011 the Hawkei was named as the preferred vehicle under the Manufactured and Supported (MSA) option of Land 121 Phase 4, beating competition from then-Force Protection's Ocelot (Foxhound in UK service) and an evolution of the Eagle 1V proposed by General Dynamics Land Systems - Australia.

Fierce domestic lobbying resulted in the introduction of the MSA component more than a year after Australia had invested USD40 million in the Technology Development phase of the United States' Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) programme with no mention of a possible Australian alternative.

Australia subsequently decided against investing in the follow-up JLTV Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase.

The Hawkei has seating for up to six occupants in the four-door and up to three occupants in the two-door versions and is powered by a 200 Kw turbo diesel engine.
